"My Baby Dreams Came True" - Mariah Carey tells Us about overcoming miscarriage and expecting a little one with hubby Nick Cannon - by Eric Andersson

On a recent morning in the New York City home she shares with Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey tells Us she felt at peace. "Nick was sleeping. I was lying in bed next to him," says Carey, who, on October 28, finally confirmed the news that Us was first to break: She's expecting her first child. "I was like, Oh, this is a real feeling of contentment."

Getting there wasn't easy. After their six-week courtship and April 2008 wedding, Carey, 40, got pregnant. But early in her second trimester, she suffered a miscarriage. The singer cried herself to sleep many nights, but she and Cannon, 30, host of NBC's America's Got Talent, didn't give up. Carey began taking progesterone, a hormone that is often prescribed to boost fertility and support or help maintain pregnancy in women susceptible to miscarriage — and earlier this year, they conceived. With their baby due this spring, Carey, whose album Merry Christmas II You is out now, and Cannon open up to Us' Melanie Bromley.

Congratulations! How do you feel?
MC: I'm very happy. But there's other stuff that comes along with pregnancy, physically: I'm sleepy and in a constant state of nausea! I can kind of control it if I just calm down and don't throw up. It's not great for a singer to throw up! My little trick is Dr. Brown's soda. It's syrupy, so that helps.

Tell Us how you found out you were pregnant.
MC: We were at home in L.A. and I did a pee test, and then I did another and another. At one point I had, like, a collection in my bathroom! Those things aren't always accurate. I'm about taking blood and all that, really. So I was like, Let me just make sure.

"I consider myself a survivor and a very optimistic person, nobody discourages me"

Singer, lyricist, producer, actress and philanthropist, Mariah Carey is back on the crest of the wave. After a hit album (Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel) and single (Obsessed), and following appearances at President Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony and Michael Jackson's funeral, the pop star has now returned to the cinema screen in Precious, where she plays a social worker trying to help an adolescent single mother, who is pregnant with her second child.

Seated on the sofa in a small lounge in a Beverly Hills hotel, the great diva sips an espresso while her makeup artist applies the final touches for the photo session. Venus Mimi, as her friends call her, looks relaxed and contented. She is in a good mood, and is keen to talk about her latest work in front of the movie camera, her music, her philanthropic work (the singer has made generous contributions to organizations like the Fresh Air Fund and the Make A Wish Foundation) and, in passing, her underprivileged childhood. After her role in Precious, she is now releasing Angels Advocate, a collection of duets with some of her favorite artists.

What does it mean for you to go back to acting?
Finding new expression for the other side of my creativity, which I haven't been able to show until now. Working on Precious was an extraordinary opportunity to bring out the other part of what's inside me.

Do you identify in any way with Precious, the film's protagonist?
I'd say I do, yes, because when I was small I always considered myself different from everyone else. When you come from an interracial family – my father is Afro-American and my mother is white – it's very hard to blend into a group. People don't consider you either black or white, so I always felt very isolated.

What would you say you are?
My mother taught me to answer that question by saying I'm multiracial. The term then became 'biracial'. What people are afraid of saying is that they're half black and half white, so they have to invent exotic names to define themselves or feel more easily accepted.

"People Think I Was Born In A Bubble"

At home in her Manhattan apartment, Mariah Carey talks about her troubled background, why she had to "de-Mariah" herself, and how "Precious" changed her life.
Interviewed by Dawn Sutton

Mariah Carey has made our jaw drop. No, she's not on time, but she's starring in a film that's actually really good (who remember her previous foray into film, the so-bad-it's-bad Glitter!>). Her role in Precious- which is nominated for six Oscars- sees her sporting visible facial hair and is a huge change from Mariah's usual glamorous image- perhaps her marriage to Nick Cannon is making her mellow. The pair are even rumored to be looking to adopt a baby soon, and Mariah has taken an uncharacteristic back seat to writer some songs with her hubby to be sung by a new girl band.

Here, Mariah talks all about Precious, why she's dreading turning 40, and what it was like to get frumpy.

You're turning 40 later this year...
Don't say the F word around me! (Laughs)

You got married two years ago, your life has changed a lot. How are you feeling?
I would definitely say these are some of the happiest days in my life. I've been working on my album, which I am so excited about. I couldn't think of something, another project, that I would rather be in more than this.

Q&A: NICK CANNON

Mr. Multitasking talks about his DJ gig at Underground and V-Day plans with wife Mariah Carey.
Nick Cannon is a busy man. To say the least. The actor-producer-record exec-TV star-you-name-it not only hosts “America’s Got Talent” and a morning radio show in New York, he's chairman of the Teen Nick network; is CEO of his production company, Ncredible, and his own record label, Can I Ball Records; produces about eight TV shows; and owns high school magazine Celebrity High. Oh yeah, and he’s married to Mariah Carey.
Cannon, who lives in New York and L.A., estimates that he sleeps two hours a night. Three on a good night.
At 10 p.m. Saturday Cannon will DJ--name: DJ Sexyfingerz--for the third time at Underground ($20 cover; RSVP to rsvp@rockitranch.com). On his way from the Def Jam offices to the MTV building in Times Square, Cannon, 29, talked about his DJ skills and his Valentine’s Day weekend plans with his wife, who performs Saturday and Sunday at Chicago Theatre.
I’ll name a list of elements in a possible Valentine’s Day celebration. You tell me what you will or won’t be including: Fireplace. Bearskin rug. Chocolate sauce. Edible underwear. A donkey.
- Wow. None of those except maybe the chocolate sauce. [Laughs]
That’s the only one? No chance of the others?
- No donkeys! Unless we’re putting luggage on his back to walk to the cars with. But the donkey cannot be in the room.
What do you really have planned for Valentine’s Day this weekend? I saw you were shopping for sweets.
- Just really hangin’ out. Obviously we gonna be in the Chi. Just spending time with each other, spending that whole day just havin’ fun. We kind of cherish that time when we don’t have to do anything and don’t have to work, so that’s probably what it’ll be about.
What are some spots in Chicago you’re hoping to check out?
- I mean, probably mostly the hotel room. The Pier’s always a great place to go, so if it’s not too cold we might venture down there.
Last Valentine’s Day you guys started a fire in your hotel room.
- Yeah, she saved my life.
How did she put it out?
- There was a bunch of vases with water in it and roses and she just thought extremely fast, ripped all the roses out of the vases and just started throwing the water on the fire.
That must’ve been surreal.
- Yeah, I was just screamin’ like a little bitch while she was being the hero.
What did she say to you afterwards?
- I mean, nothin’. I was too busy giving her props for saving my life that she was just like, “I had to think fast.”
What can people expect from your DJ set at Underground Saturday?
- I like to bring the fun, you know what I mean. The hottest new records. I like to throw some stuff in there that’ll make people smile or giggle and stuff like that. It’ll be some throwback stuff, just keeping the BPM’s goin’, keeping people dancing.
Be honest: How many Mariah Carey songs do you put into a set?
- At least three. [Laughs] If she shows up it’ll probably be more. But she's got some bangers. “Obsessed” is a smash, the new “Up Out My Face” is a smash, and then the classic “Fantasy.” So I always gotta play that. I think every DJ plays those.
Do you expect that she’ll swing by after the show?
- You never know. It always depends how she’s feeling after the show. The most important thing is her voice, so we never going to jeopardize that. But sometimes if she knows I’m going to DJ she come in there and keep an eye on me.
I hear you and your wife are trying to conceive, which is awesome. Do you have any suggestions for setting the mood?
- [Laughs] Uh, not really. That’s funny that people just make stuff up like say we’re trying to conceive. That was news to me. I also heard I was adopting a Haitian kid too. Stuff like that is funny. We just leaving that type of stuff up to God and when the time is right.
Some articles are, like, you guys are hiding in a bunker just getting down to it.
- [Laughs] Yeah, that’s definitely buggin’ me out. People just make up stuff like that.
So that’s not the goal.
- Yeah, nah. We don’t need to try. When it’s right, it’ll be right.
What advice do you have for guys who are dating older women?
- Uh, don’t think about it. I’ve kind of always been a dude that was just attracted to people more mature than I was. You gotta be a person who understands a female if you goin’ to venture to someone who’s probably a little more mature than you. Guys already got so much goin’ up against us with women being smarter than us. So you gotta be ready for it.
So when you say “don’t think about it,” you mean most people shouldn’t do it?
- No, if you put too much thought into it you’re going to screw it up.
Because women are already five steps ahead of us.
- Exactly. So if you try to analyze it then you’re really going to set yourself up. So go with the flow, enjoy yourself. Age ain’t nothin’ but a number.

JERMAINE DUPRI "BELONGS"

His Production of Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” Cited as Decade's Most Popular Song

Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together,” the second single from her 2005 comeback album, The Emancipation of Mimi, and a two-time Grammy winner, was recently named the most popular song of the last decade, based on record sales, airplay and online streaming. The pop ballad was produced by Jermaine Dupri, who was brought in by IDJ’s L.A. Reid after the album was practically finished, to craft a few more songs, including “We Belong Together,” a hip-hop ballad that helped the album go on to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide. Dupri fills in HITS’ own last-minute addition, Roy Trakin, on the details.

Did you feel any pressure when you were brought aboard to work with Mariah?
Not at all… This was part of a second batch of songs we worked on when she did come back. We wrote it together. Most of the time when I make records with Mariah, I basically write them while she’s there in the studio. She’s a super-prolific writer. And that’s how we’ve always collaborated. She gives me the vibe for the kind of record she’s looking for, then we start playing different chords and keys to see where we’re headed.

She took more of a natural vocal approach.
There are people who think she’s singing as hard as she ever did, because they hadn’t heard her like that in a long time.

Who had the idea for the lyrical references to Bobby Womack and [L.A. Reid and Babyface band] The Deele?
Bobby Womack was my idea, but the Babyface thing came from [co-writer] Johnta [Austin]. I’m sure we would have never put those in there, if we knew they’d be getting writers’ credit. I never realized that just mentioning someone’s name warrants 1% or 2%. I’m going to go back and listen to see how many people say, “Jermaine Dupri.”

Did you realize at first how popular it would be?
The first two we did, “It’s Like That” and “Get Your Number,” were more uptempo. When we got back together in the studio, my idea was, let’s try some ballads this time—let’s flip the switch. We put a condenser mic in the studio so we could record every idea we came up with. When we went to play it back, you could hear the song coming to life. I cut the vocal myself at first, and she followed my direction to a “T.”

It crossed over to every audience.
I’m really speechless that the song was able to connect to so many different people. My style of production does not sound like pop music when you first hear it. Fortunately, they end up going that way. I had no idea what it was going to do; I just knew it was a good Mariah record. In my mind, it doesn’t sound like the song of the decade—it’s too different. It doesn’t sound like anything else.

What are you working on now?
I have a new R&B artist named Dondria, who has this song “You’re the One,” which just entered the charts.

THE OBSERVER - GUARDIAN UK: WHO ARE YOU CALLING A DIVA?

She's pop's precious princess – and one of its richest – but Mariah Carey is now getting rave reviews for her role as a dowdy social worker in one of the most talked-about films of the year. It's her coolest career move yet.

Mariah Carey is about to enter the room. At least that's what her people are telling me. I'm sceptical because they have been telling me the same thing in slightly different ways for the past three hours. Now here I am, in a chintzy hotel suite at the Dorchester at 9.30 on a Friday night, and my initial anger has given way to a sort of weary resignation, because to be invited into the world of Mariah Carey one has to leave normality far behind. This, after all, is the global megastar who, if the media reports are to be believed, once insisted she "didn't do stairs" and whose backstage demands are said to include baskets of puppies and a special attendant to dispose of her chewing gum. The time delay, it seems, is all part of the sensory experience.

Still, the signs look hopeful. At around 9.40pm there is a sudden flurry of activity in the hotel suite as several smartly dressed women walk in, cast their eye over the room and walk out again. One of them shrieks with horror when she notices that a corner of the rug has been disturbed and rushes over to flatten it with her hand. Another one places a bottle of mineral water on the table in front of the sofa. "Will she need a straw?" the woman asks. "I would anticipate the need for a straw," replies the bodyguard gravely, as if he were a top-level physicist working overtime to ensure the smooth operation of the Hadron Collider.

Then, miraculously, everyone disappears as though they have been sucked away by the tidal drawback that heralds a tsunami, and Mariah Carey walks in. Actually it is more of a teeter – she is wearing knee-high black boots with a 6-inch heel and seems to be having difficulty negotiating the plush white carpet. She wobbles over to the sofa, a glass of red wine held perilously askew in one hand, and lowers herself down in stages until she is sitting precariously on an overplumped cushion. "Actually the chaise would always be my favourite," she says, gesturing vaguely towards a chaise longue in the corner of the room. A lackey instantly offers to move it for her. "No," says Carey, smiling like a benign feudal overlord, "I won't go that far." Instead she hoists her legs onto the sofa and reclines backwards, the heels of her boots catching slightly against the upholstery as she does so.

At 39 she makes quite a visual impact: tumbling golden-brown hair, honey-toned skin and a formidable cleavage that is today enhanced by a necklace with Carey's stage name – Mimi – spelled out in diamonds. Her face is pretty but unthreatening, bronzed and buffed with layers of perfectly applied make-up. Unlike many celebrities, Carey looks exactly as she does in her promotional photographs, as though the airbrushing somehow seeps through into real life. Everything about her is unapologetically overdone, a caricature of fabulousness. "This height of heel is what I wear," she explains at one point. "Even my slippers. I can't even walk in flats."

ACTION IN ASPEN

Jasmine, kamarádka MC, popsala ve svém sloupku vánoce strávené s MC.
Jasmine, a friend of MC, described Christmas with MC in her column.

I began my adventure this year by flying to LA just before Christmas to join my Christmas family, the Carey-Cannons. We flew out of the hot LA weather from the private air field wearing t shirts. Then, four hours later, we pulled on our polo neck sweaters as we landed on the thick snowy runway of the Aspen air field, which is full of celeb and wealthy jet plane owners.

After I had helped Mrs C purchase some of her gifts, we returned to the house where we played what was to be the first of many games of 'Mafia'.

Let me explain the game: A group of people are divided into two groups – 'Townspeople' and 'Mafia' – depending on which card they are dealt. No one is aware of each others' status but the aim is to work out who the mafia are in order to execute them, whilst in turn, the mafia during the night bump off the townsfolk. The ever-festive Nick was his usual animated self and had us all involved, screaming and pleading our cases in minutes.

On Christmas Eve, after skiing and snow-boarding we went sledging. Imagining myself in an old James Bond movie, I had visions of husky dogs pulling us through the snow. However, once on top of the mountain, it became clear that this was the kiddie activity that involved us sitting on a brightly coloured plastic vessel and hurling ourselves down the steep hill. Nick and Mariah's friends Pastor Kase and Deric (DJ D Wrek from Wild n Out) began the races downhill, whilst I looked on like a scaredey cat. I finally convinced Deric to let me piggy back his sledge and so we started the two-on-two races against the Carey Cannons. A nearby gent offered to lend me his "extra fast sledge," which had just been waxed to ensure ridiculous speed.

I agreed, but instead of using it myself, I naughtily passed it to the Carey Cannons, thinking it would freak them out – it didn't. They used it and they won.

As soon as we got home, we changed into our festive red PJ's and awaited the arrival of Santa, who of course, Mariah knows personally. The kids were all put to bed as we placed ourselves strategically behind curtains and sofas to film and capture the children's faces as Mr Claus awoke them with his cries of "ho ho ho."

Once Santa had done his duties, we all dragged him into the living room to pose with us under the 20-foot high Christmas tree. I sat on his knee, as is traditional, and reassured him of my good behaviour the past 12 months. In return, he let us all ride his sleigh around the front garden and yes they were real reindeer!

Before we went to our beds, Nick warned us with an evil twinkle in his eye that 'Santa' would be waking us at 6am for present opening. "No way," I thought. Well, how wrong I was. Mr 'Saint Nick' (Nick dressed as Santa), stomped up and down the house in his big black Santa boots and huge pillow belly, ringing the bell from hell to wake us all up. After three attempts to ignore him, I dragged my lazy ass down to the Christmas tree where wrapping paper and screams of joy were flying. How could I not get into the Christmas spirit?

As well as the traditional socks, scarves, gloves and toys being exchanged, there were also gifts with handles, heels, diamonds and one with wheels!

That evening, we all put on our best frocks to sit down to Christmas dinner, which tasted mouth-wateringly good.

Later, thoroughly exhausted, we hit the sack early as the next day Mrs C was taking her version of the bus – the jet – to Italy to pick up her special award for best supporting actress at the Capri film festival for her role in the movie Precious.

MC collected her very appropriately shaped mermaid award (which is now sitting in her mermaid room) on the red carpet with a wall of paparazzi documenting her every move. After only 24 hours in Capri, we jetted to New York City, where a whole heap of new adventures awaited me!

PRIDE: CONFESSIONS OF A DIVA

Nové číslo britského Pride s titulním článek o MC. Velké scany zatím nejsou.
A cover story with MC in the UK's Pride magazine. No HQ scans yet.

Mariah Carey has a lot of stuff going on right now but still found time to talk with Cynthia Lawrence. They talk about Mariah's performance in "Precious", how Sidney Poitier told Mariah he didn't recognize her in the movie, about Mariah's sense of humor and of course - the diva rumors:

---- Our tete-a-tete inevitably moves to the diva myth that surrounds the superstar. "I've been a diva since I was three. And what?" she laughs. "The true meaning of a diva is a talented female singer. My mother sang opera, and so all my life I heard my mother going, 'Oh, she is very much the diva,' way before they had Divas Live." But that's not the definition of diva we're talking about! What of the rumours that Mariah demands fresh flowers in each hotel room? "People give me flowers upstairs, but I didn't say I wanted that!" Oh, and she gets her assistant to pick out the blue M&Ms... "Blue M&Ms? Do they even exist? I don't really eat chocolate M&Ms. Here comes my diva," she jokes. "A diva would be like [she waves a manicured hand and taps her nearly empty wine glass], 'Rachel, wine, I need more wine!' We all have it in us." She gets up to refill her glass, offering me a top-up before tottering back to the sofa, legs curled back under her. "I'll tell you this." She leans forward as if sharing a secret: "I think that's sexist. There are a lot of difficult male divas out there, but no one says anything about them. See, I don't take this shit seriously." ----

MY DESERT: MARIAH CAREY SAYS "IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR"

There's a scene in the urban drama, "Precious," where the title character asks her seen-it-all welfare case worker, "What color are you?"

The plain, light-skinned Miss Weiss replies without breaking her monotone, "What color do you think I am?"

That weary case worker bears little resemblance to the Mariah Carey we know as Billboard's top charting-topping female vocalist of all time. Her black hair is flat with unbecoming bangs. Her makeup is meant to make her look dowdy, with a hint of a mustache.

Carey has done dozens of interviews about her onscreen transformation, which has helped her earn positive reviews and a nod as the Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Palm Springs International Film Festival's Jan. 5 Awards Gala.

"A lot of people told me they didn't recognize me in the film," she says by telephone from her New York home. "No, it's not glamorous. I don't care, but people seem to be fixated on that."

Instinctively, Carey says she probably wouldn't respond to a question about her skin color as Miss Weiss does in "Precious."

Maybe when she was growing up, she says, but not now.

"It's interesting," she says, "because I grew up in an interracial family - biracial, whatever you want to call it - black father, white mother -- an extended kind of family."

THE HOT SEAT: MARIAH CAREY

The Hot Seat Interview: Mariah Carey Mariah Carey is having an interesting moment. After nearly two decades of ubiquity, for the first time her music feels sort of underrated. Released in September, her latest, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, is smart, mature and occasionally hilarious, but for an artist with more No. 1 songs than Elvis Presley, it's been surprisingly smash-hit-free. Meanwhile, Mrs. Nick Cannon's acting career, pronounced DOA the moment the first critic saw Glitter in 2001, is in the throes of vindication. Playing the frumpy, mustachioed welfare worker Mrs. Weiss in Precious, she has a breakout role in the season's most talked-about indie flick. The Greenlawn, Long Island native phoned TONY from her Tribeca lair as she prepared for a busy holiday season, climaxing with a New Year's Eve set at Madison Square Garden.

How do you wrap your mind around the enormity of headlining the Garden on New Year's Eve?
I have to be festive on New Year's. A couple years ago I sang at Times Square right before the countdown. We had a police escort, 'cause you can't get past the people otherwise, and I'm looking up at all this confetti and sparkly stuff like, Now, this is New Year's. It was freezing and I was in a little ensemble, which I know is shocking to you, but it was just amazing. My goal is to make everyone feel as festive—I know I'm redundant with that word—as possible. I don't want to give it away, but I'm thinking, What can we do at this show to re-create how I felt standing in the middle of Times Square onstage? Because some people are scared as hell to go there.

A police escort might help. You know, I was listening to your album just before you called, and I actually got a little hungry.
[Laughs] Yeah, why?

You have all these food metaphors. There's a line about Duncan Hines cake...
Duncan Hines yellow cake.

Sorry, Duncan Hines yellow cake. You also mention McDonald's fries and gelato. Is there anything you like to eat before a show?
I have to eat a little, because otherwise I won't make it through the show. I can't give away my lovely new diet secrets, which are very intriguing.

Why?
They're actually somebody else's thing.

I see. I read a gossip item that said you're a cheese freak. Is that true?
I cannot believe that was written. What's wrong with this freakin' world? In an appropriate manner, yeah, I like cheese and wine together. But I probably wouldn't eat cheese just randomly like, "Let me go get some cheeeeeese."

Hey, I do that. So can you just stop on a dime and hit those whistle-register high notes?
Sometimes I wake up and that's the easiest thing for me to do. Because I'm still kind of raspy. [Purrs in soprano] I like to do that.

It cleans out the pipes?
Yeah. But sometimes, when my middle register is more clear, those notes are harder to hit. I have a three-dimensional vocal cord situation. The breathy voice is its own thing. It requires a certain amount of sleep.

Did you base your Precious character's accent on anyone in particular? You really nailed that motherly woman who's from Long Island, or maybe the outer boroughs.
The person I was basing it on was sort of [Affects accent] lowa Westchesta. She probably goes to City Island, you know, for a little bit of seafood. [Laughs]

You mean someone from Yonkers? Mamaroneck?
[In accent] Ya, ya got Yonkiz... [In regular voice] It's a combination. There's one woman who's not a social worker but works with kids. She doesn't really have an accent like that—I was channeling her behavior. And then there's this woman from... [In accent] lowa Westchesta.

Do you feel like you've atoned for your Razzie Award?
I never cared about that stupid thing. It just gets annoying when eight years later, they're like, "The Glitter star, da-da-da." I'm like, "Yeah, you're current." There have been worse movies. And I'm not sticking up for that movie. 'Cause it wasn't my thing. I didn't create it. But I do think the soundtrack is good.

The first issue of the Czech magazine InTouch has an cover with MC and abusive story inside. MC is mentioned as fat alcoholic and Nick as victim of her growing sober. We are used to read smears in Czech media about MC, but this article is too harsh. So, if you want, send an email to the editors - intouch@bauermedia.cz. But I recommend don't write hateful mails, better is accusing ones with sane approach. Angry mails are not helpful, on the contrary they can harm MC more in the editors eyes. We can be glad not to read about her last flop album, but I think it's only the matter of time :(

MC GIVES NEGLECTED KIDS A BIG GIFT IN ASPEN

Cestou zoět do Denveru děti v autobuse sledovaly vánoční filmy vybrané MC.

When she wasn't dodging paparazzi while visiting Aspen on Monday, singer Mariah Carey was brightening the day for 35 abused and neglected kids. Carey rented the city-owned Aspen Recreation Center for four hours Monday afternoon to throw a party that the invited youth probably won't forget.

"This is an opportunity they haven't had before," said Jude Liguori-Oliver, child protection services administrator for the city and county of Denver. "Many of these kids haven't been out of Denver. A lot of them haven't been in the mountains."

The kids scurried up the recreation center's climbing wall, swam in the pool and floated on the Lazy River, went ice skating, and were entertained by jugglers, magicians and storytellers, some of whom were dressed as elves. All of the kids were between ages 9 and 12. The child protection services department is working to get the children in safe and permanent homes – with their families whenever practical.

After playing at the ARC, the kids got a visit from Santa Claus, who was accompanied by Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon. The trio pulled up in a sleigh on wheels pulled by reindeer.

The children definitely knew their celebrity host. "Oh absolutely. As soon as she got off the sleigh they started screaming, 'Mariah, Mariah, Mariah," Liguori-Oliver said.

A specially decorated winter scene was created at the ARC where each child got to individually visit with Santa, flanked by Carey and Cannon. A professional photographer snapped their pictures, which each child will receive. On the bus ride home, the 35 kids and 15 staff members watched Christmas movies purchased by Carey. The 16-hour day was well worth it.

"It was just all about the kids," Liguori-Oliver said. "We are very grateful. Mariah is a celebrity that gives back."

Carey couldn't be immediately reached for comment Tuesday through her publicist. She has a history of throwing parties in Aspen for less fortunate kids. She has hosted children selected by Liguori-Oliver for three years. The previous two winters they congregated at Bumps Restaurant at Buttermilk and went tubing in a special area created by the Aspen Skiing Co. Some locals said Carey has been hosting parties for the kids for about 10 years.

Carey is a longtime Aspen visitor, particularly around the holidays. She is usually tracked by celebrity photographers. Numerous online gossip sites tend to focus on what she's wearing. There is rarely mention of her efforts to help underprivileged kids, and she didn't visibly seek publicity for this year's party. Word spread this year because it involved a public facility. Patrons were curious about why it was closed.

The recreation center was closed to the public between noon and 4 p.m., city recreation director Tim Anderson said Tuesday. Carey rented the facility for $1,000 per hour.

A man who helped Carey organize the party contacted the city about one week ago with an inquiry. Typically, the city wants to give ARC patrons more notice when there is a closure but Anderson and his staff felt the cause warranted the temporary inconvenience.

"It was a good thing. We felt a celebrity doing something for kids was a good thing," he said.

City taxpayers benefited as well. The ARC's total revenues for Monday were about twice as much as on Dec. 21 last year, according to Anderson.

The community recreation center is available for rent on a case-by-case basis. There is no set fee, but Anderson said the rent is higher in the evening, when the facility draws more customers. Carey's party worked well because it was in the afternoon, which isn't quite as busy, Anderson said. Anderson and Carey's representatives negotiated a rent deemed fair to both sides.

"This was for some less fortunate kids so we held the price down a little bit," Anderson said.

PAPER MAGAZINE - UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Mariah Carey wore no makeup for her breakout role in Precious. And she's finally starting to speak out about the abuse in her past. The queen diva may be getting serious, but girlfriend still loves her some gold lamé.

Getting just a moment with Mariah Carey takes exactly as much effort as you would think. It involves standing outside a maze of private partitions during her photo shoot, waiting for the small window of time in which you can say hello. It also involves phone calls from an ever-increasing number of assistants and publicists until you're so confused, you don't know who is connecting you to whom and how. But this is Mariah -- one of the biggest-selling recording artists of all time, a one-namer up there with Elvis and Aretha. So you do it. And at the end of it all, you are glad you did, because when the protective cloud of managers, bodyguards and publicists disappears and you finally do speak to her, she is sometimes naked. Literally.

"I'm in the bathtub, did I tell you that?" She says to me over the phone on a recent Friday afternoon. "It's not a bubble bath but it has one of those buttons so it sends bubbles and makes the water all fuzzy. I have a little bronchitis thing right now." She also had a pain in her side. Doctors had ruled out appendicitis but she was going in for an MRI the next day just to be safe. She attributes this dip in health to all the traveling and handshaking she has been doing to promote her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which came out in October, and now the release of the film, Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, in which she has a very noticeable supporting role that proves once and for all that she has the acting talent to go along with the songwriting genius and powerful pipes.
